One of the 12 remaining original castles in Japan, as well as being one of five designated as National Treasures, Inuyama Castle overlooks the Kiso River near the border of Gifu and Aichi. The site dates back to 1440 making it the oldest castle grounds in Japan. However, it's current fortifications date back to 1537 when it was held by the Oda Clan--the current tenshu being constructed in 1601. This was prior to being privately owned by the Naruse Clan between 1617 and 2004 when it was turned over to a foundation established by the local government.
