This massive bronze statue stands in front of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the city of Barletta on the Adriatic Sea. The statue is nearly 3 times life size at 16 ft. 7 in. (5.11 meters) and depicts an early Eastern Roman Emperor whose identity is unknown. The statue purportedly washed up on the shores of Barletta after a Venetian ship sank that was returning from the 4th Crusade in 1204. This crusade ended with the sacking of Constantinople after the emperor of that time made the mistake of allowing the crusaders access to the city. This had the affect of greatly weakening an already declining Byzantine Empire which opened the door to a more rapid spread of Islam especially into the Balkans. The placement of the statue is apropos since the Church of the Holy Sepulchre served as a headquarters for the Knights of Malta during the mounting of the crusades.
