Fotod Nine Maidens stone row

Men Gurta, autor RoyReed

Also known as the St Breock Downs Monolith, this prehistoric standing stone is the largest and heaviest in Cornwall. It probably dates from the late Neolithic or early Bronze age (around 2,500-1,500BC). Formed from local stone, Devonian shale veined with feldspar, it weighs about 16.5 tons, is 4.9m high and stands within a low cairn. The stone fell over in 1945 but was re-erected in 1956.
