Replacing an older fortification built by Charles I of Hungary, construction of Corvin Castle began in 1446 CE on the orders of John Hunyadi (Ioannes Corvinus in Latin, Iancu de Hunedoara in Romanian), a wealthy Hungarian political and military figure who was regent of Hungary from 1446 to 1453 CE. Work slowed when he died in 1456 CE and completely stopped in 1480 CE—nevertheless creating one of the largest and most impressive buildings in Eastern Europe. The 17th century CE saw expansion, including two new towers for military purposes. Restoration after a major fire and decades of neglect took a fanciful turn.
