"The gothic shell and steeple, set prominently half-way up the hill, survived the bombs of 1941. The steeple is Wren's, built in 1695-1701. The rest by David Laing, 1817-21. This replaced the fire damaged shell, patched up in 1668-71 without the aid of the Rebuilding Commissioners, following a private benefaction...
