Fotod Bourbon Tunnel

Tunnel Bourbonico, autor Dean Ayres

This underground tunnel was built at the orders of the Bourbon King Ferdinand II of Naples to link his royal palace to the barracks, to act as an escape route in case of revolution. The tunnel connected with several roman cisterns, but never reached the palace because the rock became unsuitable. The adandoned tunnel was used as a hospital during the second world war, and then as emergency accommodation for homeless napolitans after the retreating nazis attempted to destroy the city in September 1943. In the 1950s the tunnel was used as the city car pound. Today the tunnel is open for visits. www.tunnelborbonico.info
