I recently had the opportunity to visit the <b><a href="http://www.hagginmuseum.org/collections/bierstadt_yosemite_valley.shtml" rel="nofollow">Haggin Museum</a></b> in Stockton
California. One of their most popular collections is those done by an
artist that inspired me is the artist <b><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Bierstadt" rel="nofollow">Albert Bierstadt (1830 - 1902)</a></b>. Before
photography people relied on artist such as Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Hill
to provide a look at the wonders of the West. His paintings of Yosemite
and the Rockies should be inspirational to any landscape photographer.
Bierstadt visited Yosemite making several sketches of the valley then
returned home to paint these wonderful sites based on his sketches and
notes. At the time, he was criticized by many art critics and some of the
public for being grandiose and for exaggerating the color and scale of the
scene. Of course those of us who have seen Yosemite Valley know that no
picture does it justice. Not even those taken by modern digital cameras.
Personally I find his colors to be somewhat muted and the scale of some
objects to be quite accurate given the measuring device was probably his
thumb or end of his pencil.
Of course this scene has long since vanished after Chief Tenya and the
people of Yosemite Valley were forcibly removed to a reservation near
Fresno. The Native Americans had a practice of setting the valley on fire
to keep the meadow area clear and free of trees. They then used the valley
meadows for a number of daily needs much as the modern area would use a
Wal-Mart. Pine trees have now filled in many of the meadows. This
particular vista appear to be quite near a pull out on the main road that
runs in two directions though Yosemite Valley.
This painting in particular is my personal favorite and is currently acting
as my Desktop Background. I have uploaded it at my screen size of <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/liquidmoonlightcom/4773008972/sizes/o/">1920 x 1280</a>.
If you should need a different screen size just contact me off line
and I will make it available at your screen size. Sorry, I will not
release the full size image.
I had to do some cleanup to fix a shadow caused by the large frame and I
took some liberty to clean up the cracking of the oils that have occurred
over time and the image was cropped slightly to accommodate my screen size.
Otherwise the image is untouched.
I would like to add that the folks at the Haggin Museum were all very
generous and helpful and went above and beyond. The museum's policy allows
photography with full size tripod. (With noted exception of some special
exhibits.) I was allowed to freely take images of their wonderful
Bierstadt collection for my own personal uses and I hope this policy
continues. NOTE: I am providing the image here on Flickr for a limited
time so that landscape lovers who may not have the opportunity to make it to
Stockton can see the image in detail. If you can make it to visit the
Haggin Museum I highly recommend you do so. The admission to the museum is
quite reasonable at only $5.00 and half that for anyone over 65. On the
Tuesday we visited they had an open banquet and wine at no additional
charge. I am not sure if they do this just once a month or every Tuesday.
Call ahead to find out. Regardless, it's a bargain at even 1800's prices.
Well, perhaps not quite but still a great deal especially in today's
economy. Prints of this scene and the others in the Haggin Museum are
available for very low prices in the gift shop. Click on the Flickr map
to see where the museum is located.
