Catedral de San Jose, Saint Joseph Cathedral, was consecrated in 1680. Heavily damaged in the earthquake of 1773, it was re-built in the 1820's. The Spanish Colonial City of Antigua, Guatemala was founded in 1543. At one time it was the capital of most of present day Central America. A series of earthquakes in the 18th Century led to the destruction of most of the town. Largely abandoned after the earthquakes, it has been reborn as a tourist and cultural center. It features an amazing collection of Colonial Architecture, and is one of the oldest and most historic cities in the Western Hemisphere.
